Labor Secretary Warns States Could Lose Federal Funding If Illegal Immigrants Get Unemployment Benefits

 U. S. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer issued a warning to states regarding the disbursement of unemployment benefits to illegal immigrants, emphasizing the importance of complying with federal directives.

• The Secretary stated that unemployment benefits are intended only for eligible workers who are legally authorized to work in the U. S. and actively seeking employment.

• States risk losing federal funding if they do not adhere to existing laws against granting unemployment benefits to illegal immigrants.

• This warning follows a presidential memorandum and executive order aimed at preventing "ineligible people" from receiving taxpayer-funded benefits.

• The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has provided states access to the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database at no cost for verifying applicants' immigration status.

• The SAVE database is a crucial resource for confirming the citizenship of individuals applying for benefits.

• A recent finding revealed that illegal immigrants on the terror watchlist have received Medicaid and unemployment insurance.

• Legal challenges to the Trump administration’s immigration policies have emerged, including a federal judge's order that prevents the government from cutting funds to "sanctuary" cities.

• In addition to unemployment benefits, there are efforts underway to restrict illegal immigrants from accessing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), with states being instructed to verify applicants' legal status.

The Secretary of Labor stressed the need for strict adherence to federal regulations regarding unemployment benefits to prevent ineligible individuals from receiving taxpayer-funded assistance.
