Rachel Maddow of MSNBC chose not to air Donald Trump's victory speech at the Iowa Republican caucuses, claiming it was due to potential untruths Trump might say. This decision highlights the role of mainstream media as "Gatekeepers," deciding what information their millions of viewers receive.
The Gatekeepers have been biased, protecting the public from certain viewpoints, such as those of Republicans, while allowing misstatements by Democrats to go unchallenged. For example, CNN allowed Rep. Veronica Escobar to falsely claim that Trump told people to inject themselves with bleach to fight COVID-19.
Constitutional eligibility is another area where the Gatekeepers fail to provide context. Nikki Haley, a potential 2024 presidential candidate, was declared ineligible by Trump due to her parents not being U.S. citizens at her birth. However, the Constitution defines a "natural born citizen" as someone born to citizen parents, which Haley is. The Gatekeepers dismissed Trump's questioning of Haley's eligibility without exploring the issue.
The Gatekeepers' bias is based on the Fake News template that labeled Trump a criminal for questioning the 2020 election results. They refuse to examine evidence of election interference and unconstitutional changes in election rules, instead declaring claims of election fraud as "the Big Lie." This approach discourages election challenges and makes future cheating more likely.
The media's efforts to suppress information have resulted in a backlash from the public. Voters are turning away from the Gatekeepers and gravitating toward politicians like Trump, who reject their control. The Gatekeepers, however, continue to demonize Trump and his supporters, refusing to acknowledge the validity of their concerns.
Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, criticized the Gatekeepers at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, urging Democrats and President Joe Biden to be more respectful toward Trump supporters. Dimon acknowledged that Trump was right about certain issues, such as NATO and immigration, and that his supporters voted for him based on policy, not as members of a cult.
Despite Dimon's warning, the Gatekeepers continue to attack Trump and his supporters. MSNBC's Joe Scarborough, for example, distorts reality in an attempt to protect the nation from a second Trump presidency. He falsely claims that Trump wants the economy to crash, the border to remain open, and to shoot his enemies on the street.
The Gatekeepers' "say-anything, fact-check-nothing" approach to attacking Trump may backfire, as it will likely motivate the MAGA base to vote in record numbers to protect Trump from these attacks. The media's bias and refusal to provide context have led to a loss of trust among the public, who are now seeking information from diverse sources and questioning the Gatekeepers' narratives.
