NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg says allies are stepping up in their commitments to defense spending, and gives some of the credit to President Donald Trump.
"Since President Trump took office, NATO allies across Europe and Canada have spent an additional $41 billion extra in U.S. dollars on defense."
"NATO allies and I personally very much respected the late Sen. John McCain for many reasons, but not the least because of his very strong support to NATO and to the transatlantic bond," the NATO chief said, noting that the organization doesn't have a tradition of naming buildings after politicians.
All NATO allies have agreed to stop cuts to defense budgets, to increase spending, and to move spending to 2 percent on defense by 2024.
Last year, NATO allies across Europe and Canada boosted their defense budgets by a combined 5.2 percent in real terms, the biggest increase in a quarter of a century.
As a candidate for president, Trump called NATO "Obsolete" and criticized allies for not paying their fair share.
Russia's military aggression against its neighbors in Georgia and Ukraine is a major reason NATO allies have invested more in defense for the first time since the end of the Cold War, Stoltenberg said.
