US colleges working to inject DEI into AI for classroom use: Defending Education

A report from Defending Education highlights efforts by U.S. colleges to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) ideals into artificial intelligence (AI) systems before they become widely used in education.

Institutions aim to embed DEI in AI to institutionalize these principles in schools when AI tools are adopted.

Notable colleges involved include Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of California, Berkeley, Columbia University, Virginia State University, and Morgan State University.

MIT's RAISE initiative seeks to promote an inclusive future in education and offers curricula that help students understand AI and its ethical implications.

UC Berkeley’s BAIR lab conducts research and initiatives focused on responsible AI and addresses issues like discrimination in AI language models and gender biases in generative AI.

Columbia University aims to leverage AI for social good, particularly through their AI4SGS initiative, which targets societal inequities and enhancing chatbot safety for LGBTQ+ communities.

The report also mentions that major teachers’ unions are aligning with these goals, working to incorporate DEI into AI prior to its widespread classroom use.

These initiatives reflect a proactive approach to ensure that as AI becomes integrated into education, it promotes fairness and equity across various communities.
