The US Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon has reported that over 80% of the nearly 100 people federally charged with trafficking fentanyl in Portland are illegal aliens from Honduras and Mexico. The crackdown on drug trafficking began in 2023 and continues as authorities aim to eliminate drug-related crimes in the city.
Authorities have seized over 100 kilograms of fentanyl, 40 guns, and $1.3 million in drug-related profits, which is enough fentanyl to potentially kill 50 million people, or 11 times Oregon's population.
Scott Bradford, the Oregon US Attorney, has committed to prosecuting anyone involved in the fentanyl trade, addressing the unsafe conditions in downtown Portland caused by open-air drug markets and rising crime.
Several individuals have been sentenced for their roles in fentanyl trafficking:
Luis Carlos Moreno-Mencia received 60 months for possession of 167 kilograms of fentanyl.
Olvin Fabricio Diaz-Centeno received 87 months for involvement in a trafficking ring, with firearms and counterfeit pills found at his location.
Bexon Calix-Rivera was sentenced to 78 months for intent to distribute fentanyl.
Cristian Laines-Hernandez was sentenced to 27 months for possession of fentanyl bags.
All defendants face deportation after serving their sentences, with officials emphasizing that drug traffickers will eventually be caught. Portland authorities continue to prioritize the crackdown on dangerous drugs.
