A federal appeals court has reinstated important parts of a Texas law from 2021 aimed at strengthening election security, including stricter voter ID requirements and new oaths for those assisting voters.
The Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has restored provisions requiring voters to provide identification or Social Security numbers on mail-in ballot applications, ensuring these match state records.
The law also mandates that assistants helping voters must sign an oath, confirming they did not coerce the voter and verifying their relationship to the voter.
Critics argue these requirements could complicate voting for elderly and disabled individuals, while supporters see them as necessary to protect against voter fraud.
The court found that those challenging the law did not have legal standing for most claims. Previously, a lower court had blocked the law by invalidating nine of its provisions.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton hailed the court's ruling as a significant victory for election integrity and a step to prevent voter fraud.
The court's decision reinforces Texas's commitment to stricter election measures. This reflects ongoing efforts to enhance election security, aligning with similar initiatives in other states, including recent developments in Florida regarding voter roll integrity.
