DHS: 233,000 unaccompanied children lost under Biden

A recent report by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reveals that over 230,000 unaccompanied children were released from immigration custody during the Biden administration and are now unaccounted for. This finding raises serious concerns about the safety and management of these minors.

• Unaccounted Minors: DHS Inspector General Joseph Cuffari reported that a significant number of the 233,000 unaccompanied minors became lost after being released into the U. S., including 31,000 who were sent to invalid addresses.

• Inadequate Vetting: The report highlighted that the sponsors to whom these children were released were not properly vetted. This lack of oversight poses risks for the minors.

• Track Record Issues: An earlier report by DHS mentioned that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) cannot effectively track many unaccompanied minors. Over 43,000 missed their court hearings, making them difficult to locate.

• Risks of Exploitation: The report emphasizes that many of these missing children are at heightened risk for trafficking, exploitation, or forced labor.

• Criminal Concerns: Some of these unaccompanied minors are older teens with criminal backgrounds, bringing into question the safety of those around them after their release.

• Preventive Measures: In response to these alarming metrics, ICE has established a special unit to locate lost minors and has conducted visits to 50,000 homes to check on 200,000 children.

• Political Responses: The House Oversight Committee meeting, where Cuffari testified, noted differences in opinion about the immigration policies of previous administrations. Democratic members expressed concern regarding the implications of current enforcement practices targeting children.

The DHS's findings on unaccompanied minors reveal serious systemic issues in the U. S. immigration system concerning the tracking and safety of vulnerable children. The ongoing hearings aim to identify ways to reform procedures to better monitor and support these minors and clarify the responsibilities of DHS and Health and Human Services (HHS).
