With an $800M deficit and layoffs coming, LA Mayor Bass seeking bailout

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced a significant financial crisis for the city, revealing an $800 million deficit and plans for substantial staff layoffs.

• Mayor Bass indicated that the city plans to lay off 1,647 employees, which is about 2. 7% of the total workforce of 61,455.

• The Mayor attributed the revenue shortfall to the Trump administration and the overall economy, claiming that "turmoil and uncertainty from Washington and a slowing economy" have led to decreased revenue.

• The city paid out over $8. 3 billion in payroll last year, with an average salary of $135,355 per employee, which is more than double the median citywide salary of $57,247.

• The planned layoffs will only address about 25% of the $800 million deficit.

• During her State of the City address, Bass announced that she would travel to Sacramento, seeking state assistance to help with the city's financial predicament.

• City Controller Kenneth Mejia has warned that the city is facing severe budgetary issues, predicting revenue $140 million below projections for the current fiscal year and higher-than-expected spending exceeding $300 million.

• Future revenue is also projected to be $79 million lower than expected, influenced by economic downturns, emerging technology, and reduced federal grants.

• Bass’s proposed budget indicates spending $13. 92 billion against revenue of $13. 95 billion. However, if revenue falls to $7. 89 billion, further reductions will be necessary.

• Importantly, the proposed budget does not include cuts to the number of police officers or firefighters.

Mayor Bass’s announcement underscores the critical financial struggles facing Los Angeles, highlighting the need for state intervention and potential further layoffs if the economic situation does not improve.
