Illinois lawmakers are proposing new legislation to change certain voting procedures, despite opposition from county clerks.
• Curbside Voting Bill: Rep. Nabeela Syed introduced House Bill 1442 to establish curbside voting to reduce long lines for seniors and people with disabilities during elections. Some experienced wait times of up to three hours.
• Opposition from Clerks: Brian Pollock from the Illinois Association of County Clerks argues the bill is unnecessary since curbside voting is already available but rarely used.
• Vote by Mail Options: House Bill 1444 aims to simplify the vote by mail application process by allowing voters to apply for permanent mail-in status. Syed believes this will reduce frustration, while Pollock warns it could increase voter confusion.
• Federal Election Order: President Trump signed an order that mandates states reject ballots not received by Election Day, differing from Illinois’s current postmark rules.
The proposed bills aim to improve voter access but face criticism regarding their necessity and potential complexity.
