When media is A.W.O.L. we all lose

Just last week, the student government at Harvard voted to condemn the university's student newspaper, the Harvard Crimson, for daring to follow basic journalism guidelines.

For a September story on student protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions, the offending news organization merely reached out to the agency for comment, as would be standard practice in any newsroom in the country.

Incensed students circulated a petition that was signed by more than 900, demanding that the paper, "Apologize for the harm they inflicted on the undocumented community," by requesting a comment from ICE. On Nov. 5, student newspaper The Daily Northwestern of Northwestern University's prominent journalism school, covered the big news of the day.

"The Daily sent a reporter to cover that talk and another to cover the students protesting his [Sessions] invitation to campus, along with a photographer. We recognize that we contributed to the harm students experienced, and we wanted to apologize," the editorial read. "Some protesters found photos posted to reporters' Twitter accounts retraumatizing and invasive. Those photos have since been taken down," the astounding piece continued.

"Nothing is more important than ensuring that our fellow students feel safe."

College culture has for decades fostered an environment where students are engaged in loud melodrama and made to feel important and relevant in lieu of having lived any real life experiences.

The editorial continued: "Some students also voiced concern about the methods that Daily staffers used to reach out to them. Some of our staff members who were covering the event used Northwestern's directory to obtain phone numbers for students beforehand and texted them to ask if they'd be willing to be interviewed. We recognize being contacted like this is an invasion of privacy, and we've spoken with those reporters - along with our entire staff - about the correct way to reach out to students for stories."
