President Donald Trump announced that 23 governors have signed an extension of the Ratepayer Protection Pledge, aimed at shielding American households from rising electricity costs linked to data centers driving artificial intelligence (AI) growth.
Trump spoke at the Environmental Protection Agency, showcasing support from four Republican governors for the pledge.
The agreement requires major tech companies to fund or build necessary energy infrastructure for their operations, rather than passing costs onto consumers.
Approximately 200 stakeholders, including utilities and data center developers, have endorsed the pledge since its introduction in March.
The goal is to protect consumers from price increases and ultimately lower electricity rates.
Trump encouraged communities to accept data centers, claiming this would lead to financial benefits and job creation as companies will produce additional electricity for the grid.
The Ratepayer Protection Pledge represents a collective effort to ensure that the financial burden of the increased energy demand from AI is managed by the corporations benefiting from it, rather than everyday American consumers.
