STEVE MILLOY: Congress Must Repeal All Green New Scam Subsidies

President Trump's campaign focused on eliminating what he called the “Green New Scam,” related to over a trillion dollars in climate spending from President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). As Republicans prepare to pass a significant new bill, there is unexpected resistance to removing these subsidies.

• The IRA, passed in August 2022, had no Republican votes and was given special treatment to bypass a Senate filibuster due to a ruling by the Senate Parliamentarian. Vice President Kamala Harris broke a tie for its passage.

• Since the IRA was enacted through reconciliation, it can also be repealed in the same manner. Republican leaders aim to include this repeal in their forthcoming Big Beautiful Bill, targeted for discussion after Memorial Day.

• A letter from 21 Republican House members cautioned against repealing the subsidies, indicating that GOP members want assurances before supporting the bill. These members represent states that have received substantial funding from the IRA.

• Many of these representatives feel pressured due to the significant financial resources allocated by Biden, which may influence their future political support.

• Some opposition to repealing the subsidies also comes from the oil and gas industry, benefiting from tax credits related to carbon capture and sequestration in the IRA.

• Critics argue that the emissions captured under these subsidies are insignificant in the context of global emissions and that the oil industry does not need such subsidies to prosper.

President Trump pledged to repeal the IRA's subsidies, and many voters supported this promise. Now, with congressional Republicans faced with the opportunity to fulfill these campaign commitments, they must navigate resistance from within their ranks and external pressures. It is crucial for them to act in line with the priorities set by their constituents.
