Judge Shelley Joseph faces June public hearing for letting illegal immigrant escape court

Judge Shelley Joseph will face a public hearing in June due to allegations of misconduct involving an illegal immigrant escaping court.

• Judge Joseph, who earns over $200,000 a year as a Boston District Court magistrate, is accused of "willful judicial misconduct" for allowing a man in the country illegally to evade U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

• The Massachusetts Commission on Judicial Conduct announced that the hearing is set for June 9 in Suffolk Superior Court, Boston. Joseph's attorney, Thomas Hoopes, has not commented on whether he will proceed with the hearing or negotiate a settlement.

• Joseph allegedly violated the “Code of Judicial Conduct” by failing to follow legal procedures.

• In 2018, she was charged by former U. S. Attorney Andrew Lelling for helping an illegal immigrant avoid immigration officials. These charges were dropped and the case was referred to the judicial conduct commission for further evaluation.

• The commission cited multiple charges against Joseph, including a lack of cooperation with judicial disciplinary authorities.

• If the case advances, it will function similarly to a trial, with both sides presenting evidence before any decisions are made regarding her conduct.

• Joseph's situation is part of a broader discussion regarding judges and immigration enforcement. Recently, another judge in Milwaukee faced felony charges for similar actions involving an illegal immigrant.

Judge Shelley Joseph's upcoming public hearing will address serious allegations regarding her judicial conduct related to an illegal immigrant’s escape from court. This case highlights ongoing tensions between judicial actions and immigration enforcement in Massachusetts.
