GOP criticize Arizona governor's vetoes of immigration bills

On Monday, Republicans criticized Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs for vetoing two bills aimed at protecting communities from criminal illegal immigrants. These vetoes were part of 23 bills she announced on Friday.

• One vetoed bill, Senate Bill 1610, would have required county jails to give information about illegal immigrants arrested for serious crimes to U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

• Governor Hobbs explained her veto by stating that it would put excessive burdens on local law enforcement and emphasized that the state should not take orders from the federal government.

• Republicans argue that Hobbs is neglecting public safety by vetoing these measures, with state Senator John Kavanagh expressing frustration over the influx of dangerous criminals entering the country illegally.

• The other vetoed legislation, House Bill 2099, would have mandated cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, which Hobbs rejected, asserting that decisions should be made by Arizonans.

• The Republican Governors Association condemned Hobbs' actions, labeling her as an "Open-Borders politician" and criticizing her for not supporting stricter immigration enforcement.

• In her defense, Hobbs stated her commitment to working with the federal government on actual border security measures.

These vetoes have sparked significant debate in Arizona about how to address immigration and public safety, with strong reactions from both sides regarding the governor's choices.
