• A security analyst stated that the threat from Afghanistan is now greater than it was before the 9/11 attacks, as the Taliban controls the country and supports terrorist infrastructure like training camps and safe houses.
• A February United Nations report noted that Al Qaeda members have access to weapons from the former Afghan government, which they obtained either through the Taliban or the black market.
• The Biden administration reportedly left approximately $7. 12 billion in American military equipment with Afghan forces during the troop withdrawal.
• Some of these weapons have ended up in the hands of terrorist groups outside Afghanistan.
• The Taliban has treated Al Qaeda members as refugees, providing them documents that allow them to move into other countries.
• Some Taliban revenue has been generated from U. S. taxpayer funds intended for foreign aid, with substantial sums reported to have reached them through various means.
• The Trump administration has criticized Biden's military withdrawal from Afghanistan, which resulted in American and Afghan fatalities and a rapid Taliban takeover.
• The Department of Defense (DOD) stated that the withdrawal is under review but did not comment on SIGAR's recent warnings.
The SIGAR report highlights that Afghanistan's status as a terrorist haven is attributed to the Taliban's support of Al Qaeda and the consequences of the U. S. military withdrawal, raising concerns about future threats to the U. S. and its allies.
