The eight retailers highlighted
in the below link have made the decision to close a total of between
2190 and 2665 of their stores during 2013. There will, of course, be
huge layoffs and more shuttered store fronts as a consequence. Some
have been struggling for several years. Others, maybe all eight, have
suffered from the expanding e-economy (its growth replaces some of
the local store job losses). But, the decline in local retail sales
suggests the overall economy is continuing its decline. Local
economies, most of which are already facing financial
difficulties, will the lose the tax resources these employers and their
former employees once provided.
