William Lawrence, a Democratic congressional nominee for Michigan’s 7th District, is under scrutiny for deleted social media posts that critics claim reflect controversial views. The investigation by CNN’s KFile highlights these posts from his past as a progressive activist.
The social media posts, made under a previous account, included support for abolishing or defunding police and prisons, advocating for open migration, and calls to dissolve the U.S. Senate.
Lawrence criticized moderate Democrats and questioned traditional family structures in these posts.
He posted inflammatory lyrics in December 2021 urging political opponents to “hurry up and die” after Sen. Joe Manchin opposed key elements of President Biden’s agenda.
His past activism includes co-founding the Sunrise Movement, which advocated for the Green New Deal.
Although he has deleted the posts, Lawrence has rejected some of those past views, stating that he no longer supports defunding the police or open borders.
Lawrence acknowledged his past behavior, explaining that many millennials reflect on their thoughts online as they grow.
Lawrence's earlier social media activity raises concerns as he campaigns for office, reflecting a journey of personal and political evolution while attempting to distance himself from his past views.
