The Obama Center, which recently held its opening ceremony, is facing serious allegations regarding unpaid bills to several contractors who worked on the project, resulting in financial distress for some companies.
Mike Owen, owner of Adamson Plumbing Contractors, revealed that his company has suspended operations and laid off around 30 employees due to non-payment from the Obama Center.
Adamson Plumbing filed a $1.72 million mechanic’s lien against the property, indicating the seriousness of the payment dispute.
Owen mentioned that delays and project changes led to actual losses of $3.9 million for his company.
A promised payment of $100,000 was not received on time, causing Owen to shut down operations as he could no longer support his workforce.
The Obama Center project, which was initially budgeted at $350 million, has reportedly risen to $830 million, with additional costs anticipated.
Subcontractors involved in the project have expressed financial difficulties, including significant claims for unpaid work.
Lakeside Alliance, the construction management group, stated that they are still working on closing contracts despite the project’s opening.
The situation surrounding the Obama Center raises concerns about financial management and accountability in large public projects, particularly impacting small and minority-owned businesses.
