Healthcare Shouldn’t Stop at State Lines

The United States is facing a shortage of healthcare workers, particularly in rural areas where there are not enough doctors and nurses. This situation is impacting patient care negatively.

1. Healthcare Worker Shortage: Many rural communities lack sufficient healthcare professionals, resulting in limited care options for patients.

2. Urban vs. Rural: Most healthcare providers are concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural areas underserved.

3. Interstate Licensure Compacts: These compacts allow healthcare providers to practice across state lines, particularly through telemedicine, enhancing access to care without increasing costs.

4. Reduced Bureaucracy: Compacts lower the administrative burdens and costs for providers, allowing them to serve patients in underserved areas more efficiently.

5. Competition and Quality: Increased competition from interstate practice can lead to better services, as providers would need to improve on responsiveness, quality, and pricing.

6. Urgent Need for APRN Compacts: While compacts exist for physicians and registered nurses, there is a lack of an APRN compact, which is necessary due to the vital role of nurse practitioners.

Interstate licensure compacts offer a practical solution to expand healthcare access and ensure patients receive the care they need, particularly in underserved regions. It is critical for states to adopt these compacts to maximize the healthcare workforce effectively.
