NATO member will withdraw troops in case of war with Russia

As tensions rise on the Russia-Ukraine border, Croatian President Zoran Milanovic has announced that Zagreb will withdraw its troops from NATO contingents stationed in the region if the situation escalates into a full-scale conflict.

Speaking in a televised address on Tuesday, the leader said he saw "Reports that NATO - not a separate state, not the United States - is increasing its presence and sending reconnaissance ships."

On Monday, the US-led military bloc announced its members will command more fleets and fighter jets in Eastern European waters as Russia "Continues its military reinforcement" in the middle of the ascending row.

Spain and France focus on Southeast Europe, with Madrid considering sending ships to "Join NATO naval forces and plans to send combat aircraft to Bulgaria." Meanwhile, Paris "Expressed its willingness to send troops to Romania under NATO command."

In December, Russia submitted two draft treaties, one addressed to Washington and the other to NATO. In addition to preventing Kyiv from joining NATO, Moscow is insisting that the bloc refrain from military activity on the territory of the former Warsaw Pact states that joined after 1997, following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has refused to compromise on issues the organization considers crucial to its core values in order to meet Russia's demands.

In 2020, the Croatian parliament supported the deployment of the country's armed forces in nine separate missions, including NATO contingents stationed in Poland.
