Robert Mueller hands federal prosecutors inquiries into lobbyists as foreign agents:

Cases involving the work of longtime Democratic lobbyist Tony Podesta, former Obama White House counsel Greg Craig, and former Minnesota Republican Rep. Vin Weber are among those referred to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to a new report.

CNN reports the inquiries involve whether lobbyists and operatives failed to register their work as foreign agents and were referred to the New York federal prosecutors earlier this spring.

Mueller's investigation into former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort led to the review of Podesta and his work for his former firm, the Podesta Group, Weber and his work for Mercury Public Affairs, and Craig, a former partner at law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, according to the report.

Manafort and his associate Rick Gates were indicted last year with failing to register as foreign agents, conspiracy against the U.S., and conspiracy to launder money, among other crimes.

Gates agreed to a plea deal in February in exchange for his cooperation.

Opening statements in Manafort's trial started today.
