DOJ subpoenas Calif. election officials over suspected noncitizens registered to vote

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched a criminal investigation in California regarding allegations that thousands of noncitizens are registered to vote. This comes as officials in Los Angeles County receive subpoenas in relation to the matter.

• The DOJ issued subpoenas to at least two employees from the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s office, demanding information on how to screen for unlawful voting by noncitizens.

• Recently, the DOJ provided California with a list of voters they suspect are noncitizens, warning that lack of compliance could lead to legal actions.

• Los Angeles County received a thumb drive with the names of 20,000 individuals flagged as suspicious on their voter rolls, asking them to set aside any ballots from these individuals for further verification.

• L.A. County Assistant Registrar-Recorder Monica Flores stated that they lack the authority to withhold ballots based solely on the DOJ’s third-party claims about voter citizenship.

• Separating ballots for citizenship verification is considered impractical and would hinder timely election results, as noted by Flores.

• The investigation gained further momentum when a federal judge rejected the DOJ's request to segregate ballots based on the suspect list.

• The DOJ has also alerted 57 of California’s counties to assist with inquiries into potential voter fraud and expanded efforts to Washington state.

The ongoing investigation into voter rolls for noncitizen registrations raises concerns about election procedures and the authority of local officials. The responses from California officials emphasize adherence to existing laws amidst heightened scrutiny from federal authorities.
