US Teen Mental Health Is Finally Improving After COVID Crisis

Recent data from the CDC shows signs of improvement in teenage mental health in the United States, following severe declines during the COVID-19 pandemic. A biennial survey highlights positive trends among high school students regarding feelings of sadness and suicide thoughts.

The latest survey indicates that the percentage of high school students who experience persistent sadness has decreased significantly from 42.3% in 2021 to 33.3%.

The rate of students seriously considering suicide has dropped from 22.2% in 2021 to 14.5% in 2025.

This positive trend marks the second consecutive biennial survey showing improvements after a disturbing peak in mental health issues during the pandemic.

Despite these improvements, concerning disparities exist; girls report higher levels of mental distress than boys.

Mental health outcomes are particularly worse for teens identifying as LGBTQ. About 59% of these individuals reported feelings of sadness and hopelessness, compared to 28% of heterosexual teens. Additionally, 32% of LGBTQ teens have seriously considered suicide, while only 11% of heterosexual teens reported the same.

The context of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric in the current administration raises concerns about further marginalization of these vulnerable youth.

While the data indicates an overall improvement in the mental health of American teens, significant issues, especially among girls and LGBTQ youth, remain. Addressing these disparities is crucial for fostering better mental health outcomes for all teenagers.
