Waste of the Day: Town Manager’s Snacking Spree

Michael Boaz, the former town manager of Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, has been indicted for felony embezzlement due to unauthorized purchases made on a city credit card between 2022 and 2024. A recent state audit confirmed his misuse of funds.

● Boaz made questionable purchases totaling $18,426, primarily on food and personal expenses.

● His spending included $12,897 at restaurants and 34 DoorDash orders costing $1,576.

● Additional purchases included $2,300 in Visa gift cards, $442 on Apple electronics, and a hotel charge of $419 for a family stay while traveling to Alaska.

● Notably, Boaz spent $276 on ammunition without any clear business purpose.

● The audit revealed that Boaz had used a stamp of the mayor's signature to issue checks alone, which was against the rules requiring dual signatures.

● Furthermore, Boaz was reportedly working as a private consultant for another town while being paid by Pilot Mountain.

Boaz was placed on administrative leave in October 2024 and was terminated in December 2024 for misappropriation of funds, leaving Pilot Mountain with a significant debt of over $775,000. During his tenure, he was the highest-paid public employee in the town's history, with an annual salary of $104,583.
