No friends for Comey; judge rules no amicus briefs

Judge Louise Flanagan ruled that no amicus briefs will be allowed in the federal case against James Comey, the former FBI Director, who is facing charges related to threats against the president.

● The ruling was issued in the U. S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

● Comey faces two federal counts for allegedly posting an image of seashells arranged to spell out "86 47," which is interpreted as a threat regarding the president.

● The arraignment is scheduled for September 30, 2026, and the trial is set for October 21, 2026.

● The judge noted that there is no federal or local rule granting permission to file amicus briefs, and the court has chosen not to allow them in this case.

● Competent legal representation for both the defendant (Comey) and the government was acknowledged by the court, making additional input unnecessary.

The court made it clear that it has the discretion to decide on the inclusion of amicus briefs and has chosen to deny any future requests. The case continues against Comey, who previously served as FBI Director under President Obama and was notably involved in investigations regarding President Trump's ties to Russia.
