37 Senate Democrats Urge USPS to Refuse Trump’s Vote-by-Mail Executive Order

On Monday, 37 Senate Democrats sent a letter to the U. S. Postal Service (USPS) board opposing an executive order from March 31 that requires USPS to use state-provided lists to determine voter eligibility for mail-in and absentee ballots. The order emphasizes U. S. citizenship as a criteria for receiving these ballots.

• The letter, led by Senator Chuck Schumer and supported by three committee leaders, argues that the executive order unconstitutionally shifts election control from states to the executive branch.

• Executive Order 14399, signed by President Trump, mandates the creation of uniform standards for mail-in ballot processing within 60 days and prohibits sending ballots to voters not on an eligibility list.

• The order requests the Department of Homeland Security to compile federal citizenship records into state voter eligibility lists.

• Senators claim this order could effectively prevent mail-in voting in states unwilling to comply, giving USPS undue power over election processes.

• There are ongoing legal battles related to both the voter data and mail-in ballot aspects of the order, with lawsuits filed by various parties.

• The White House maintains that election integrity is a priority, claiming the president's policies reflect this agenda.

The Senate Democrats are urging USPS to reject the executive order, asserting it undermines the constitutional role of states in managing elections and could restrict access to voting by mail.
