Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is actively opposing Ukraine's potential membership in the European Union due to concerns that it could lead to wider conflict in Europe, given that Ukraine is currently at war with Russia. He has directly addressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on social media, arguing that allowing a country in conflict to join the EU would pose significant risks to all member states.
In response to Zelensky’s acknowledgment of EU discussions on Ukraine's accession, Orbán emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the EU. Zelensky, in turn, criticized Hungary for blocking the Union’s decisions and urged member states to work together on EU negotiations and sanctions against Russia, which he feels are vital for Ukraine's support and recovery.
Despite Ukraine’s ongoing war and issues like corruption and lack of democracy, Zelensky is pushing for fast-tracked EU membership, while also being aware of the significant financial costs related to rebuilding his country after the war. There are fears that resuming hostilities, even after a possible ceasefire, could further entangle Europe in conflict.
