With the situation in the European Union growing more unstable by the day the British government is making preparations to assist its citizens in the event of monetary collapse and the accompanying social unrest.
The UK Telegraph reports:
Diplomats are preparing to help Britons abroad through a banking collapse and even riots arising from the debt crisis.
The Treasury confirmed earlier this month that contingency planning for a collapse is now under way.
A senior minister has now revealed the extent of the Government's concern, saying that Britain is now planning on the basis that a euro collapse is now just a matter of time.
"It's in our interests that they keep playing for time because that gives us more time to prepare," the minister told the Daily Telegraph.
Recent Foreign and Commonwealth Office instructions to embassies and consulates request contingency planning for extreme scenarios including rioting and social unrest.
Recent talk in Spain that their new government could be forced to request a bailout from the EU or the IMF combined with nearly unsustainable yields for Italian bonds have fueled speculation that the euro is on the brink of collapse. European Union treaties and membership rules contain no procedures or guidelines to deal with the loss of member states which likely means that the breakup of the EU would be a grim and chaotic business.
Meanwhile on this side of the Atlantic, White House Dossier reports that Barack Obama took advantage of the unseasonably warm November weather and enjoyed a leisurely round of golf, shot some hoops and then gathered Michelle and the girls aboard Marine One to attend the Towson University-Oregon State basketball game in nearby Baltimore. The Oregon State team is coached by Michelle's brother Craig Robinson.
