George Burns, 68, of Loysville wants to pass on a legacy of hope to his children and grandchildren and to others of those generations.
The vessel of hope is his book “Our Dying Republic,” which provides an overview of how our country came to be in its current state and a recipe for restoring it to its former glory.
His diagnosis, laid out in plain language, is that all three branches of government have failed us. “The actions of the presidents, congress and the judiciary have encumbered us with an inordinate financial burden,” he asserts.
His 319-page book, published by Xulon Press, was written, he said, as a sort of prescription to restore the health of the nation and as a legacy to his children, daughters, Heidi Harris of New Jersey, and Christina Hook of Richmond, Va., and his grandchildren, Heidi’s children, a 4-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl.
The book is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble websites. A trailer video of the book can be viewed on YouTube by visiting the website and searching Burns’ name.
A native North Carolinian and an Army veteran, Burns holds a bachelor’s degree fromPfeiffer College and a master of education degree from Boston University.
He spent his working career as a civilian with the Department of Army, developing the training and support tools soldiers need to prepare for combat missions. He and his wife settled in Perry County about four years ago, because it offered a family gathering spot almost equidistant between his two daughters.
The book, he said, “targets average people so they can see the consequence of governmental action over the past 100 years that have led us to today.”
It is organized on a political time line with chapters such as “Woodrow Wilson and American Progressivism,” “Franklin Roosevelt and the New Deal,” “Kennedy and Johnson, Welfare Statists,” and “Reagan Fails to Halt the Progressives.”
Burns terms himself an independent with Libertarian leanings, but maintains that the book will resonate with all Americans, regardless of their political persuasion.
His prescription to save America?
“We need to take responsibility for ourselves; we need to be responsible citizens and not allow the system to dictate to us how to vote. We need to vote properly, get involved in civic activities and to influence the activities of our government, be it local, state or national.”
