The U.S. government is increasing efforts to address fraud in the trucking industry, with a focus on improving road safety. This initiative is led by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy following concerns about illegal truck drivers.
Secretary Duffy's audit stems from incidents where illegal drivers caused fatalities, prompting stricter requirements for noncitizens to obtain commercial driver licenses (CDLs).
A new rule tightening these requirements has been implemented after legal challenges.
Some states have resisted cooperating with the Department of Transportation (DOT), risking federal highway funds.
A press conference in Detroit announced the formation of a group made up of several federal agencies like the DOJ and Homeland Security to combat various forms of fraud in trucking, including CDL fraud and human smuggling.
A "synchronized surge" at over 200 driving schools in 23 states was undertaken to enforce adherence to federal laws, resulting in hundreds of closures for non-compliance.
Since early 2025, 28,000 truck drivers have been removed from roads for failing to meet English language requirements.
The effort also includes a targeted initiative named “Crossroads of America,” focusing on states with high truck traffic, aiming to find illegal drivers and enforce the law.
