Michigan Senate leader asks DOJ to investigate Whitmer over $20 million fraud scheme

Michigan Senate leader Aric Nesbitt has requested the U. S. Justice Department to investigate Governor Gretchen Whitmer regarding her possible involvement in a significant fraud case connected to a $20 million grant.

• Charges Filed: Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced 16 felony charges against Fay Beydoun, 62, who is accused of misusing a grant intended for a business accelerator.

• Political Connections: Beydoun is described as a close ally and political donor to Governor Whitmer. Nessel also shares a close friendship with Beydoun.

• Senate Leader's Statement: Nesbitt criticized Whitmer's connections, arguing that such relationships potentially bias the investigation. He stressed the need for accountability, stating if Whitmer is found complicit, she must face legal consequences.

• Call for Independence: Nesbitt urged acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to seek an independent investigation into the matter, citing a unique crisis of oversight in Michigan that undermines trust in state-level authorities.

• Current Status: As of now, Governor Whitmer has not commented on the investigation request or the allegations against Beydoun.

The request for federal inquiry highlights concerns over transparency and accountability within Michigan’s government, especially regarding the governor’s potential involvement in the fraud scheme linked to her ally.
