Germany Demographics: More Than One in Four People Now Have ‘Migration History’

Recent statistics show a significant increase in the number of people in Germany with an immigration history. This trend has considerable implications for the country's demographics and economy.

• As of 2025, over 26.3% of Germany's population, approximately 22 million people, have an immigration history, up by 0.5% from the previous year.

• The term "immigration history" includes those who immigrated since 1950 or have two migrant parents, a stricter definition than the earlier "migration background. "

• Additionally, 4.2 million people born in Germany have at least one migrant parent, totaling nearly one-third of the population connected to migration.

• The total immigrant population stands at 19.8%, with 16.4 million immigrants, marking a 1.7% increase from the prior year.

• While immigration rates have slowed compared to previous years, the overall immigrant population has grown significantly, by nearly nine million since 2005.

• The largest migrant groups in Germany are from Poland (1.5 million), Turkey (1.5 million), Ukraine (1.3 million), Russia (1.0 million), and Syria (1.0 million).

• People with immigration history tend to be younger, with an average age of 38.2 compared to 47.6 for those without such a background.

• Critics highlight the challenges faced by immigrants, such as higher rates of long-term unemployment and substantial welfare dependence.

Germany's demographic landscape is changing, reflecting both opportunities and challenges related to immigration, as policymakers continue to debate the impacts of these trends on society and the economy.
