All U.S. truckers, bus drivers will be required to take commercial driver’s license tests in English

The Trump administration is implementing new measures requiring all truckers and bus drivers to take their commercial driver’s license tests in English. This initiative aims to enhance safety in the transport industry and ensure drivers meet federal English proficiency standards.

1. New Testing Requirement: All commercial driver’s license tests must be taken in English, as announced by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, to help drivers read road signs and communicate with law enforcement.

2. Current Practices: Many states, like California, have offered tests in multiple languages, allowing drivers to demonstrate English proficiency without taking the test in English.

3. Recent Safety Concerns: These changes follow a series of fatal accidents involving unqualified drivers, including a crash in Florida that resulted in three deaths and another in Indiana that killed four people from an Amish community.

4. Enforcement Actions: States must ensure drivers can speak English before granting licenses, and law enforcement will check language skills during traffic stops. A recent initiative disqualified nearly 500 drivers due to inadequate English skills.

5. Focus on Fraudulent Companies: The campaign will also target fraudulent trucking companies, known as "chameleon carriers," which avoid enforcement by changing names and registrations. Strengthened registration systems and more inspections are planned.

6. Previous Enforcement Efforts: The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has previously acted against companies and driving schools linked to dangerous drivers and has taken action to decertify numerous driving schools.

The government seeks to enhance safety standards by ensuring that commercial drivers are well qualified and capable of communicating in English, while also cracking down on fraudulent businesses in the trucking industry.
