Ex-NY Assembly Dem candidate swiped $160K in taxpayer funds in illegal campaign finance scheme: feds

Dao Yin, a former Democratic candidate for New York's state Assembly, is accused of stealing $160,000 in taxpayer funds through fraudulent activities related to a state campaign matching-funds program.

• Yin lost his electoral bid for the 40th District in Queens but allegedly submitted fake signatures to increase reported campaign contributions.

• He is charged with wire fraud and was arraigned in federal court in Brooklyn.

• Prosecutors claim he submitted over 200 contribution cards to the Public Campaign Finance Board, many of which were fraudulent.

• Following a primary loss where he received only 6% of the votes (approximately 185 votes), concerns arose as he had suggested more contributors than voters.

• The complaint indicates that when asked for confirmation of contributions, Yin submitted fake letters from supposed donors to deceive the finance board.

• If found guilty, Yin faces up to 20 years in prison.

• The campaign matching-funds program allows candidates to receive $12 in taxpayer money for every $1 of qualifying donations, creating a significant incentive for potential fraud.

This case highlights concerns about election integrity and the enforcement of campaign finance laws, as authorities aim to uphold the proper use of public funds in politics.
