Are Bernie Sanders and AOC the New Keepers of the Secret?

Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) have been gaining significant attention through their "Fight Oligarchy" tours across the United States. Both politicians are known for their socialist views and tell crowds that the wealthy are taking everything for themselves, robbing the rest of society of their rightful share. Despite economic critiques of socialism, these two continue to inspire a following that believes they are the new figures representing the potential for a successful socialist movement.

1. Socialist Messaging: Sanders and AOC rally supporters with messages claiming that capitalism is unfair, characterizing billionaires as the primary culprits behind economic disparity. They argue that the rich exploit others to amass wealth.

2. Historical Context: The idea that socialism can succeed with the right leaders, referred to as the "Keeper of the Secret," is not new. Historically, many socialists have believed that leadership issues, such as the deaths of key figures, have prevented socialism from working. In the 20th century, leaders like Lenin and Rosa Luxembourg were considered potential proponents of successful socialism, but their untimely deaths left a vacuum.

3. The Green New Deal: AOC's proposal for the Green New Deal aims to establish a significantly planned economy. Critics, including the Mises Institute, argue that this plan would lead to greater government control over the economy, which has been historically problematic.

4. Charismatic Leadership: The success of Sanders and AOC's messages is partly attributed to their charisma and media portrayal. AOC, in particular, receives a lot of positive attention from mainstream media, which plays a role in shaping her public image.

5. Critique of Billionaires: A key part of their campaign involves denouncing billionaires, which they claim are responsible for many societal issues. They propose that through state intervention, wealth should be redistributed from the rich to the rest of society.

6. Perception of Production: Sanders and AOC suggest that many people working in low-paying jobs do so in conditions tantamount to modern slavery and that for anyone to become a billionaire, they must have exploited others. They advocate for state control of production as a solution.

7. Lack of Detailed Plans: There is skepticism regarding their ability to execute their ideas effectively. Some supporters may not be able to articulate how these plans would work in practice, demonstrating a potential gap between their vision and practical implementation.

Bernie Sanders and AOC continue to attract a loyal following through their passionate anti-oligarch messages and commitment to socialist principles. However, their proposed solutions remain controversial, and there are serious questions about their viability and potential consequences for the economy. Despite significant media coverage, it is unclear if they can provide detailed and practical plans to achieve the transformative change they advocate.
