A host of foreign policy "Experts" are now explicitly calling for "Regime change" in Russia following Vladimir Putin invading Ukraine.
Reminiscent of the establishment's failed calls for regime change in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq, whose military conflicts cost countless American lives and resources, the sentiment appears to be at odds with the majority of the country.
Benjamin Wittes, a Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at the Washington, D.C.-based Brookings Institution, epitomized the establishment's ultimate policy goal for Russia in a recent tweet: "Regime change: Russia."
Richard Haass, President of the Council on Foreign Relations, noted how "Now the conversation has shifted to include the possibility of desired regime change in Russia" in a February 27th Tweet.
Now the conversation has shifted to include the possibility of desired regime change in Russia.
"All of us must now face the reality that we will not have peace in Europe until there is regime change in Russia. Then we should seek to welcome a new Russia as a partner for peace," wrote Carl Bildt, Co-Chair European Council on Foreign Relations and World Health Organization Special Envoy for it "Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator" program.
David Rothkopf, who worked in Bill Clinton's White House and is affiliated with several establishment groups including the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Council on Foreign Relations, shared a similar sentiment on Twitter, urging that "This much should be now clear: Until Putin is gone, Russia will be a pariah state, an outcast from the community of nations. Via one means or another, regime change in Moscow must be the goal of the civilized worldas it is the hope and goal of so many in Russia."
