CDC Reveals Children Have Highest Intake Of Ultra-Processed Foods

A recent report from the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals concerning data about ultra-processed food consumption among Americans. With new dietary guidelines set to roll out soon by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., this report highlights the urgency of addressing dietary habits.

• Americans ages 1 and up consume 55% of their daily calories from ultra-processed foods.

• Youth (ages 1-18) average 61.9% of their caloric intake from ultra-processed items, with the highest intake in children aged 6-11 at 64.8%.

• Adults (19+) average 53% intake, decreasing with age (down to 51.7% for those 60+).

• Common sources include sandwiches, sweet baked goods, savory snacks, sweetened drinks, and pizza for youth; adults primarily consume breads and tortillas.

• Ultra-processed foods are linked to serious health risks, including cardiovascular diseases and higher mortality rates.

The findings emphasize the need for the revision of dietary guidelines to limit processed foods, which contribute to health issues. Secretary Kennedy has announced efforts to remove junk food from nutrition assistance programs to promote healthier diets for children.
