Kari Lake announces huge cuts in state-sponsored ‘propaganda’

On June 20, 2025, Kari Lake, a senior adviser in the Trump administration, announced significant job cuts at the U. S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) as part of an effort to reduce what is viewed as government-funded propaganda.

• Kari Lake confirmed that 639 workers at USAGM were laid off, with overall job cuts resulting in a workforce reduction of more than 80%, leaving approximately 1,400 employees.

• The layoffs are part of a broader agenda to shrink federal agencies and eliminate perceived biases in U. S. government-funded media, which President Trump has accused of promoting left-leaning propaganda.

• These actions follow previous job cuts, including more than 500 contractors fired the month prior.

• Supporters of the layoffs, including Lake, argue that this decision reflects responsible government by cutting waste and ensuring accountability while prioritizing American taxpayers.

• The approach aligns with Trump’s goal of minimizing federal bureaucracy and addressing what he views as bloated media organizations, including the Voice of America and public broadcasting networks.

• There are ongoing congressional discussions about further defunding media outlets like PBS, NPR, and CPB.

The announcement of mass layoffs at USAGM marks a significant shift in U. S. government media funding, emphasizing a move toward reduced federal influence and accountability in reporting.
