Gov. DeSantis Rewriting Florida's COVID History Again

Gov. Ron DeSantis has worked overtime to rewrite history about Florida's experience with COVID-19, and particularly his role in managing it.

The latest head-fake came this month when DeSantis publicized a report from a grand jury the Florida Supreme Court empaneled at the governor's request that blasted mask and lockdown mandates adopting during the pandemic.

As one Florida epidemiologist noted: This COVID report is "Under reasoned," based on half-baked research and "So misleading to the point of being a flat-out lie."

That's not what a federal judge in Tallahassee did over a Florida voting rights case.

Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker responded this month to an order by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturning his ruling that new restrictions in Florida on mail-in ballots and voter registration groups had improperly discriminated against Black voters.

In his latest ruling, Walker appeared to criticize the appeals court for "Reweighing" facts in the case.

"The state of Florida has, with surgical precision, repeatedly changed Florida's election code to target whichever modality of voting Florida's Black voters were using at the time," Walker wrote.
