Religion
- Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams recently came under fire for a false claim about embryonic development
- In a clip posted to Twitter by RNC Research on Sept. 21, Abrams criticized anti-abortion legislation in Georgia that bans most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, when embryonic heartbeats can typically be detected
- "There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks," she said
- Cardiologists quickly corrected her, pointing out that this is not how ultrasound works
False Claims
- Ultrasound can’t detect electrical activity
- There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks
- The fourth week of gestation is close to the sixth week of pregnancy
- Until recently, even Planned Parenthood conceded that in the second month of pregnancy, "a very basic beating heart and circulatory system develop" during weeks 5-6 of pregnancy
