Three Democratic governors say they will not follow new CDC testing guidance

At least three Democratic governors said they will not follow new federal guidance on coronavirus testing.

"If you have been in close contact of a person with a COVID-19 infection for at least 15 minutes but do not have symptoms: You do not necessarily need a test unless you are a vulnerable individual or your health care provider or State or local public health official recommend you take one," the updated CDC guidance.

Previously, the health agency said viral testing was recommended for all individuals who believed they may have been exposed.

The change - which the CDC made quietly through a website update and without a public announcement or explanation - drew widespread criticism and confusion from public health experts who said testing of asymptomatic individuals is key to slowing and containing the virus.

"We're not going to follow the CDC guidance. I consider it political propaganda. I would caution private companies against following the CDC guidance. I think it is wholly indefensible on its face. I think it is inherently self-contradictory. It is the exact opposite of what the CDC has been saying," Cuomo said on a conference call with reporters, according to CNBC. California Gov. Gavin Newsom followed suit later Wednesday saying his state will not abide by the changes.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said the new guidance would cause his state to miss thousands of new cases and exacerbate the spread of the coronavirus.

The American Medical Association, the country's largest doctors group, criticized the Trump administration's new guidance and warned that it will lead to spikes in cases.
