By James Lewis
Al Sharpton said the other day that Herman Cain is not a real African-American, a little slander that the nasty left took up with its usual sadistic glee. But Herman Cain is one of the few real African-Americans in politics today. Cain has his roots in the core American and African-American experience over the centuries. Cain is real.
Obama has no roots. He can't be blamed for the fact that he's a Hawaiian-Indonesian-Kenyan-college campus blend. Obama has rarely (if ever) even lived in a black neighborhood. The white half of his family comes from Kansas and the black half comes straight from Kenya. Obama's only consistency in life has been the radical left, which is where his real loyalties seem to lie. Herman Cain has real roots, not ghostwritten, made-up, far-left fantasies.
There's a reason why Obama called his autobiography Dreams from My Father. In his adult life Obama never met his Kenyan father; Obama Sr. is a pure fantasy object in Obama's life. He met him only once as a child. All he has is dreams.
You can feel Cain's realness in your bones. You don't even have to look at his spectacular resume. He's a guy we could be proud of at the helm of state. His very being and achievements are an answer to all the left's phony moaning about this country. What the left hates about this country is its spectacular success, not its times of failure.
We'll have plenty of opportunity to debate Cain's political positions, his 9-9-9 proposal (it's not a plan yet, certainly not legislation, but it's a clear signal of his political philosophy, which is what we can look for at this point in the race).
Frankly, Romney strikes me as a plastic Ken doll compared to Cain. That's probably unfair, but Romney plays such a self-protective hand that I can't tell what he believes. I understand why people have to protect themselves in politics, but Romney is a slick PR package. I can only guess at the real man.
Sarah Palin is the other "real person" in this political season. That's why the feminist left has such a deep and murderous hatred of her. I really hate to say that, because that kind of insane rage reflects so badly on today's American culture. We've caught the European socialist disease really badly this time around.
The radical left attracts a lot of pathology, always has. Most assassination attempts in the last century have come from the radical left. A lot of those people are seriously disturbed, and they sound like it. Conservatives have their fringe, to be sure, but the radical left is its own fringe. They have mainstreamed extremism. Just listen to their rhetoric.
The left is a corrosive acid that divides everything it touches. The Obama left has split Jews against themselves on the survival of Israel; Christians are whipped up against each other; the middle class is supposed to be against the poor and against the very rich (who are mostly leftists, anyway, because their real competition is hot young capitalists; government is their friend). With racial socialism (set out by V.I. Lenin) the left sets race against race, and religion against religion. If peace on earth broke out tomorrow, the left would be out of a job.
This kind of race hatred has some seeds of reality, but mostly it's whipped up for selfish reasons by nasty demagogues. That's how the Nazis won power in Weimar Germany. It's routine political gaming in the Muslim world, which is always at war with itself. In Britain the Celts and Saxons were at war with each other for racial, ethnic, cultural, class, and religious reasons. We don't think of the Irish as a race; the Brits did until well into the 19th century.
Because Herman Cain doesn't live with a constant chip on his shoulder, because he doesn't have to blame other people all the time, he is an instinctive uniter. He is a man who can laugh when things seem funny.
Obama says he is a uniter, but watch his lips and all you hear is divide and conquer, divide and conquer, blame, blame, blame, blame, blame. When it was expedient for Obama to tar Bill and Hillary Clinton as racists, he never hesitated for a moment. Division and turmoil is how community agitators work. It's in the Rules for Radicals going back to Karl Marx, who hated every single ethnic group except the Prussians. (He was a Prussian.)
We don't know Cain well enough yet to have a complete sense of the man. We'll find out more. In my mind, in case you didn't notice, he's way ahead of the pack.
