Bill would bar sex criminals from getting federal pensions in wake of Eric Swalwell scandal

Senators Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) have introduced a new bill to prevent convicted sex criminals from receiving taxpayer-funded pensions and annuities.

• The bill is called the “No Taxpayer-Funded Pensions for Sex Criminals Act.”

• This initiative follows recent sexual misconduct allegations against Rep. Eric Swalwell, who resigned amid accusations from five women, including two claims of rape.

• Ernst, a survivor of sexual assault, emphasizes that allowing convicted individuals to receive taxpayer money condones unacceptable behavior.

• Currently, Swalwell, who served since 2012, is eligible for a pension estimated at over $22,000 annually due to his congressional tenure.

• Average pensions for lawmakers cost taxpayers around $38 million yearly.

• Gillibrand supports the bill as a means to hold criminals accountable and stop taxpayer funding of their pensions.

The proposed legislation seeks to ensure that public funds are not used to support those convicted of serious sex crimes, promoting accountability and protecting taxpayer interests.
