Maher Rips Democratic Socialists: If You Think Mamdani Can Reinvent This Wheel, "You're In For A Rude Awokening"

In his closing monologue, comedian and host Bill Maher critiques the Democratic Party's leftward shift toward Democratic Socialism, using the recent victory of New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani (a self-identified Democratic Socialist) as a punchline for what he sees as the party's misguided future. Maher sarcastically suggests Democrats should embrace Mamdani's vision, but argues it's more akin to Republican attack fodder than a winning strategy.

Maher contrasts Mamdani's ideology with moderate Democrats like Virginia Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger, who warned pre-2024 that extremism would "tear apart" the party and urged ditching the "socialist" label. He cites 2024 election data: All 13 Democrats who flipped Trump-won districts were moderates, per left-leaning think tanks and even The New York Times, which now advises a centrist pivot after overcorrecting on social issues post-Obama.

Maher mocks Gen Z's appeal to socialism amid economic frustrations (e.g., 30-somethings labeling fridge food), but insists it "doesn't work" based on history:

  • Global Examples: Capitalist South Korea glows at night from space; socialist North Korea is dark. Venezuela, once richer than Poland in 1990, collapsed under Chávez's "21st-century socialism" into poverty, hyperinflation, shortages, and 8 million refugees—while capitalist Poland boomed to rival Japan's economy.
  • U.S. Failures: Bernie Sanders' single-payer healthcare dream flopped in liberal Vermont (pop. 626,000), unlike the 340 million-person U.S. Maher notes America already has "socialism lite" (Social Security, Medicare, etc.) to cushion capitalism, but DSA radicals demand more, inevitably tying it to extreme social policies like open borders and defunding police.

Maher ridicules Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) conventions as absurd: Attendees needed negative COVID tests in 2025, used "jazz hands" to avoid clapping-induced "sensory overload," and were warned against "aggressive scents" like perfume. He contrasts this with establishment figures like Chuck Schumer, who can handle Chanel No. 5 without melting down.

Maher urges Democrats to reject both MAGA's "crypto crony capitalism" and DSA's "p*ssy politics," calling for a "normal" candidate who promises, "If you like your Whole Foods, you can keep it." He welcomes the party's centrist awakening but laments it took electoral losses to listen to voices like his, who've been saying this "all along." The segment ends with Maher reclaiming traditional clapping, symbolizing a return to unapologetic pragmatism.
