Professor ‘kidnapped’ by ICE indicted for assaulting federal officers

Jonathan Caravello, a professor at California State University Channel Islands, has been indicted for allegedly assaulting federal officers during a protest related to an ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raid. This incident has raised concerns and sparked discussions about treatment during protests against ICE actions.

• Indictment Details: Caravello was indicted for assaulting federal officers under 18 USC 111. He faces up to 20 years in prison. He is currently released on a $15,000 bond but remains effective as a faculty member.

• Incident Background: The California Faculty Association claimed that during his arrest, ICE agents "kidnapped" him by taking him into an unmarked vehicle without identification or explanation. The incident occurred after Caravello participated in a protest against an ICE raid at a marijuana facility.

• Protest Actions: Prior to the arrest, Caravello reported seeing armed individuals, whom he deemed a threat to undocumented neighbors. The protest escalated, and during it, he reportedly threw a tear gas canister at the officers after they had used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

• University's Response: CSU Channel Islands stated it is aware of the indictment and emphasizes the importance of respecting the legal process, affirming that Caravello is still employed there.

The indictment of Professor Jonathan Caravello highlights ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement actions and freedom of expression during protests. The case will continue to unfold as it goes through the legal system.
