More Than Half Of Voters Say Tariffs Will ‘Mostly Hurt Consumers’

A recent I&I/TIPP Poll revealed that Americans have mixed feelings about President Donald Trump's tariffs, highlighting that many view them as harmful to consumers rather than beneficial for workers.

• The I&I/TIPP Poll, conducted from August 27-29 with 1,362 adult participants, asked if U. S. tariffs help workers or hurt consumers.

• Only 23% believed tariffs help workers, while 55% felt they mostly hurt consumers.

• 11% thought they made little difference, and another 11% were unsure.

• Political affiliations significantly influenced opinions.

• Democrats and Independents largely viewed tariffs as harmful to consumers (Democrats: 76%, Independents: 58%).

• Conversely, among Republicans, 41% said tariffs would help workers, compared to 35% who said they help consumers.

• When asked if they would support tariffs that lead to higher prices to protect U. S. jobs, 37% supported this, while 44% opposed it to keep prices low.

• Democrats (23% support) and Independents (28% support) favored lower prices, while 60% of Republicans supported tariffs.

• Asked what the U. S. should focus on, 52% preferred keeping prices low even with more imports, while 34% favored domestic production despite higher costs.

• 67% of Democrats chose lower prices, while 49% of Republicans sought more domestic production.

The poll illustrates a shift in traditional party views regarding trade and job protection. Republicans have increasingly supported tariffs under Trump, diverging from their previous free-trade stance. Despite concerns over inflation, the tariffs reflect a complex interplay of economic policies that continue to affect American perceptions and purchasing power.
