Desert soils emit greenhouse gases in minutes!

A recent study from Ben-Gurion University shows that desert soils can release significant greenhouse gases quickly after being wetted, even without microorganisms.

• Researchers Dr. Isaac Yagle and Prof. Ilya Gelfand published their findings in Scientific Reports.

• Traditionally, it was believed that soil microbes caused gas emissions after rain, but this study contradicts that.

• Experiments on sterilized desert soils revealed they emitted high levels of nitrous oxide (N₂O) and nitric oxide (NO) just after wetting.

• Chemical reactions, rather than biological ones, are key to these emissions, highlighting the need to consider these reactions when studying greenhouse gases.

• Drylands are becoming more important in global warming discussions due to climate change and unpredictable rainfall.

The study emphasizes the importance of recognizing chemical processes in greenhouse gas emissions from drylands to better understand their environmental impact.
