Damning report card: California schools get an ‘F’

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) released its sixth annual College Free Speech Rankings, revealing significant concerns about free speech on college campuses.

• Claremont McKenna College in California received a grade of B- and is ranked as the best college for free speech in the U. S.

• The survey involved 68,510 students from 257 colleges, showing a decline in support for free speech.

• Students from all political views are increasingly unwilling to engage with controversial ideas.

• FIRE President Greg Lukianoff stated that students are retreating from challenging discussions rather than engaging with opposing viewpoints.

• Out of the 257 colleges surveyed, 166 received an F grade for their free speech environment, with only 10 schools earning a grade of C or better.

• Notable California schools that received failing grades included Stanford University and UC Berkeley, which was historically significant for free speech.

• The survey revealed a troubling acceptance of shouting down speakers and a growing willingness among students to use violence to stop speech they disagree with.

The findings indicate a worrying trend regarding free speech and the willingness of students to engage in civil discourse on college campuses across the United States.
