Senate pledges economic support for Russia-Ukraine deal as govt funding talks stall

As Republicans and Democrats struggle to agree on funding for the government for fiscal 2026, both parties support continued financial aid to Ukraine amid ongoing conflict with Russia.

• Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed readiness to provide economic assistance to support negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

• Thune praised President Trump for his efforts to promote peace in Ukraine during a meeting with European leaders, including Ukrainian President Zelenskyy.

• Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer supported Ukraine but criticized Trump, labeling Russian President Putin as an "authoritarian thug. "

• Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Congress has allocated over $128 billion to Ukraine, with significant military support.

• A government funding deadline is approaching on September 30, and only two of twelve appropriations bills have been passed. Republicans require Democratic cooperation to finalize these bills.

• Schumer warned of a potential government shutdown unless Republicans collaborate with Democrats without including Trump’s budget cuts.

• Congress may resort to a Continuing Resolution (CR) to maintain funding temporarily, marking the fourth time without an approved budget.

Without a bipartisan agreement, Congress faces a looming deadline to fund the government while also ensuring continued support for Ukraine.
