oni Ernst Says USAID ‘Abused the System,’ Agency Threatened Her for Seeking Transparency

Republican Iowa Senator Joni Ernst appeared on Newsmax to express her frustrations with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). She stated that USAID has obstructed her efforts to review how they manage and distribute taxpayer money. Ernst highlighted her concerns about a lack of transparency and the redirection of funds from their intended purposes, which prompted her to question USAID’s operations. However, her inquiries were met with resistance and threats from the agency.

Ernst noted that there are beneficial programs funded by USAID that contribute to global stability, which, in turn, helps the United States. Despite this, she criticized higher-ups at USAID for preventing Congress from understanding how taxpayer dollars are spent. Ernst, alongside Republican Texas Representative Mike McCaul, initiated a formal investigation into USAID after observing issues with humanitarian aid distribution, particularly in Ukraine. She claimed that aid was not reaching humanitarian contractors but was instead redirected to the United Nations, where its further allocation was unclear.

The senator stressed the importance of monitoring the funds used by USAID, as she hoped for them to support initiatives like vaccinations in Africa and food for impoverished nations. Ernst argued that it is essential to ensure that the money is used for approved goals by Congress rather than funding terrorism or supporting controversial ideologies.

Additionally, it was mentioned that President Donald Trump and Elon Musk are looking to dismantle USAID by merging its functions with the State Department. MUSK criticized USAID’s past operations and referred to the agency as a “global charity. ” In response, Democratic lawmakers are planning to use their minority status to challenge Trump's strategy, indicating they would leverage their votes on government funding and delay confirmations for his nominees.

Trump shared his view that the merger should have happened earlier, condemning the way USAID managed funds during the Biden administration as excessive.
